They originated in Visayas because it is a rural place, so they don't have high technology to catch and held fish, so they start making fish pens that helps them catch fish easier and more convinient.

There are two types of Fish Pens.

1.) Filter Net (Saluran in Filipino) - it is a kind f drift-net fishing gear with a filter bag nets, is set between poles of palm trees to catch shrimps. This type of fishery is usually undertaken a couple of days before and after the full moon, and the new moon when the tide carries strong currents.
2.) Lift Net (Tangkal in Filipino) - Lift net is a a fish net with a kerosene lamp which is ideal during the dark phase of the moon. This fish net operates at night. It is a box-shaped net, measuring about 10 centimeters that hangs from a platform of bamboo poles and is lowered near the seabed. When enough fish have been attracted by the kerosene lamp, the net is lifted by hauling the hanging lines by means of two drums.
